David Escudé, Barcelona's Councillor for Sports, has expressed strong confidence in the Spotify Camp Nou as the ideal host for the 2030 FIFA World Cup final. In an interview with EFE, Escudé emphasized the venue's unmatched capacity, its ongoing transformation, and the city's undeniable appeal as key factors in favor of its selection.
The stadium, currently undergoing a major reconstruction, is Barcelona's flagship in the joint World Cup bid with Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. Escudé noted that the technical assessment by the candidacy evaluation commission had already positioned Camp Nou as a prime contender, further boosting the city’s aspirations to host the closing event of the tournament.
Barcelona faces stiff competition from Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu and Casablanca's Gran Estadio Hassan II, a brand-new facility designed specifically for the World Cup. Despite the competition, Escudé believes Barcelona’s advantages stand out.
"The FIFA evaluation committee has recognized us as the best technical option. Barcelona offers the largest and most modern stadium, along with a city that is internationally attractive," Escudé stated, pointing to the historical significance of Barcelona hosting the 1982 World Cup's inaugural match.
Madrid's limitations in venue capacity, according to the candidacy dossier, may pose a challenge to its bid. "If the Bernabéu were selected, FIFA would need to provide a clear explanation for prioritizing it over the Camp Nou," Escudé added, highlighting the appeal and logistical readiness of Barcelona over its rivals.
FIFA’s final decision on the venue for the 2030 World Cup final is expected to hinge on technical, logistical, and strategic factors. Barcelona's new Camp Nou, projected to be Spain's largest stadium upon completion, could play a pivotal role in securing the city’s bid.
