Just when Liverpool fans might have been coming to terms with Jürgen Klopp’s impending departure, Virgil van Dijk has sent another shiver down their spines. Anfield was full of emotion on Sunday for the first game in Klopp’s farewell tour following his shock announcement on Friday. But it won't just be Liverpool’s manager leaving , with the club undergoing major changes amid the departure of his backroom staff, as well as sporting director Jörg Schmadtke.

Liverpool fans tremble, Van Dijk's decision to leave with Jurgen Klopp

And of course, there will be question marks over the futures of some players. Fans will no doubt be fearful of what the future could hold for stars like Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, especially with the latter attracting interest from Saudi Arabia. That’s why Van Dijk’s latest comments have got some supporters panicking all over again. Asked whether he saw himself being part of the next era at Liverpool, the Reds captain said: “That’s a big question. Well, I don’t know.”

Reminded that he still has 18 months left on his current contract, Van Dijk added: “That is correct, good maths. Listen, I don’t know. “The club will have a big job on their hands. That is well known. To replace the manager and replace not only the manager, the staff is leaving, and there are so many things that will change. So the club has a big job on its hands and I am very curious which direction that will go in. But when that will be announced we will see our situation. I can’t say much about it.”

The thought of not only losing Klopp and his staff, but one of the most influential players of the German’s era, will understandably leave a lot of fans fearing the worst. The truth is though, Van Dijk’s comments shouldn’t come as too big a surprise. Liverpool is in a kind of limbo now as the search for Klopp’s successor gets underway. Until we know for certain who will be taking his place in the Anfield dugout, players won’t want to make any immediate commitments without knowing the new manager’s plans.

Liverpool's future departures

Nevertheless, that does leave serious question marks over three big names. Van Dijk and Salah are both set to see their contracts expire next year, but at 32 and 31 respectively, there will inevitably be some planning for their successors in the near future. The future of Trent Alexander-Arnold though arguably poses a much bigger problem. The academy graduate’s contract also runs out in 2025, and it is imperative that the club ties down its future captain. Chances are though, Klopp’s impending departure has potentially stalled any decision on a new contract for all three players. A lot of attention has been placed on who the new manager could sign upon his arrival, but he will have three even bigger decisions to make before then.
