Real Madrid announced the signing of Kylian Mbappé, but things could’ve been different a couple of years ago as FC Barcelona had the chance to sign the French player. Josep Maria Minguella was the former agent of Mbappé, and he revealed the time when FC Barcelona went for Ousmane Dembele over Mbappé. Minguella said, “I spoke with Mbappé's parents personally. He was 18 years old, and with Neymar’s departure, they told me that it would be a pleasure to go to Barcelona. I told Barça, and they responded that Dembélé was doing better. It’s a sad story.” Sport also reported that a former Barça executive has confirmed that Mbappé could have joined Barça in 2017 when Neymar left. The French star was playing for AS Monaco at the time, and he broke into the scene in the 2016/2017 season when he had great performances in the Champions League. Mbappé joined PSG on loan in the summer of 2017 from AS Monaco with an option to buy, which was worth over $180 million.

It is hard to believe that Mbappé would’ve joined FC Barcelona since the French star has been a fan of Real Madrid since he was younger. The player confirmed that feeling towards the club when he announced his next club to be Los Blancos yesterday on Instagram and on X. Mbappé called Real Madrid the club of his dreams and is excited to play for them next season.

In the 2016/2017 season with AS Monaco, Mbappé played a total of 44 matches across all competitions. He scored a total of 28 goals and provided 14 assists. With Monaco, he reached the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League and won the Ligue 1 title. This season was enough to convince PSG to sign the player.

Ousmane Dembele in 2017

FC Barcelona went for Ousmane Dembele in the summer of 2017 after Neymar Jr. left the Catalan club to join PSG. Dembele was at Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and was a sensational talent. Dembele played a total of 49 matches for Dortmund in the 2016/2017 season across all competitions. He scored ten goals and provided 21 assists in his debut season with the German club.
