Myrto Uzuni, the Albanian striker and top scorer for Granada over the past three seasons, has completed a move to Major League Soccer's Austin FC. The American club has triggered the 12 million euro (approximately 12.6 million dollars) release clause in Uzuni's contract, securing his services for the upcoming season. Granada confirmed the transfer in an official statement on Friday, announcing that they had reached an agreement with Austin for the Albanian forward, who will no longer be part of their roster.
Uzuni had an impressive record in Spain's second division, finishing as the second-highest scorer with 14 goals, just behind Luis Suárez of Almería. However, his departure from Granada has been marred by controversy. The player reportedly went on strike after returning from the Christmas break, refusing to train in an attempt to force through the transfer. This led to him being excluded from the last three matches, a move that has been criticized and left the team weakened in terms of their attacking options.
Uzuni leaves Granada after 7,795 minutes played across 106 matches in La Liga, Segunda División, and Copa del Rey. In his time at the club, the Albanian forward netted 49 goals, making him the highest-scoring foreign player in the history of the club. He also contributed eight assists, further cementing his reputation as a key player for Granada during his tenure. The move to Austin marks the end of his successful spell in Spain, as he now looks to continue his career in the United States.
