Atletico Madrid are wasting no time in the transfer market and have already identified their next major target: Cristian 'Cuti' Romero, the Argentine centre-back currently playing for Tottenham Hotspur. According to Fichajes.net, the Spanish club are preparing a bid close to €50 million to secure the World Cup winner.

The interest in Romero comes as Atletico look to strengthen their backline ahead of the 2025/26 season. His leadership, international experience and aggressive style of play make him an ideal fit for Diego Simeone’s side, who are known for their defensive solidity.

Although the deal will not be easy, sources suggest that Romero is open to a move back to La Liga. He previously had a spell in Spain with Girona, and a return to a top-tier side like Atletico could be a tempting opportunity for the 26-year-old defender.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are reluctant to let one of their key players go. But with such a significant offer on the table, the Premier League club might be forced to consider their options. Atletico are confident that both the financial package and the sporting project could convince Romero.

Other top European clubs are also monitoring the situation, but Atletico’s interest appears to be the most advanced. The Spanish outfit see him as a priority signing and are ready to push hard to finalise the deal.

Atletico want Romero to lead the backline: a World Cup champion to anchor the defence

Looking to challenge for silverware once again, Atletico Madrid are making bold moves in the market. Signing a defender of Romero’s calibre would send a clear message, and the club are working behind the scenes to turn that ambition into reality.
