After losing 3-1 to AC Milan at San Siro, AS Roma decided to fire their now-former manager, Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese arrived in May of 2021 and won a trophy in charge of the Italian club within a month. He guided the club to a European trophy, the UEFA Conference League title against Dutch club Feyenoord in 2021.

Mourinho's full season with Roma led them to sixth position in the Serie A with 63 points. The team was 7 points away from a Champions League spot, as Juventus took fourth in the 2021/2022 season. In the 2022/2023 season, the club placed sixth again but made the Europa League final against Sevilla. The team lost to Sevilla on penalties after the score was 1-1 after 120 minutes.

This season started poorly, as the team was placing the last position on the table. They have picked up form during October and November and reached the top half of the table. In recent games, their local rivals Lazio eliminated Roma from the Coppa Italia and lost 3-1 to Milan. The team is sitting in 9th with 29 points and is five points away from the fourth spot.
