Ander Herrera arrived in Buenos Aires this Wednesday, ready to join Boca Juniors after agreeing to terminate his contract with Athletic Bilbao. The 35-year-old midfielder was greeted by over 100 enthusiastic Boca supporters and several media outlets. With high expectations for his new adventure in Argentina, Herrera shared his excitement for the upcoming chapter.
"I'm very happy. It's time to adapt and enjoy this unique experience. I'm only thinking about Boca," Herrera said upon his arrival.
When asked if he had already spoken to Juan Román Riquelme, Herrera confirmed he had and emphasized that his focus is entirely on preparing for the next Copa Argentina match. "I don’t want to think too much beyond getting in shape and focusing on the upcoming game. That's why I hope to speak with Fernando Gago (the coach) today," he added.
Herrera also spoke about the passion surrounding Boca Juniors, noting that his father had worked with the club for many years, which sparked his own connection to it. "I arrive at a team with a unique history and an incomparable passion. My father worked here for a long time and spoke to me a lot about Boca. Playing here is something unique, and it gives you goosebumps. Now, it's time to enjoy," he concluded.
Sources close to the Argentine club confirmed that Herrera arrived "with the transfer in hand" after Athletic Bilbao granted him an early release from his contract. The midfielder, who had previously visited La Bombonera and expressed his admiration for the club, is now fulfilling his dream of playing for Boca. He follows in the footsteps of Iker Muniain, who joined San Lorenzo last year.
