Former Rangers star John Brown has said that Manchester United should have made Jack Butland their No 1 goalkeeper. Butland has been doing really well at Rangers after a tough time at Crystal Palace. He's 30 years old now and has helped Rangers try to win three big trophies this season. England's manager, Gareth Southgate, even mentioned last week that he's thinking about Butland for the national team.

Last season, Butland didn't play any games and was on loan at Manchester United for six months, where he was the backup to David de Gea. Brown thinks that United's manager, Erik ten Hag, made a mistake by spending £47 million on Andre Onana instead of trusting Butland.

Brown said: "I was always a fan of Butland. I was surprised he never got more minutes down south. When I look at the Premier League there are a lot of goalkeepers down there that I'd say Jack Butland is better than.

"He was at Manchester United and for me their first choice goalkeeper... if I was going for a steady keeper then Jack Butland would be my choice. So the fact Rangers got him is fantastic for the club. The other thing is he's coming into a club with 50,000 every home game.

A new opportunity

"He's playing in Europe, going for trophies, he's got a trophy in the bag, he probably has another 10 years at the top because of the years he's missed."
