The FIFA friendly week has left many surprises and among them, one of the best players in the world decided to resign from his country's national team due to a locker room problem and the annoyance of his coach's decision to take away the captain's armband to give it to one of his teammates.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, frustrated at not being named captain on Saturday against Austria, decided not to travel to Estonia with his national team for a Germany-2024 European Championship qualifier, coach Domenico Tedesco explained Monday.

In the absence of regular captain Kevin De Bruyne, it was striker Romelu Lukaku who wore the armband on Saturday. "After the game (against Austria), Thibaut suddenly told me that he wanted to talk to me and told me that he was going back home because he was disappointed and felt insulted," Tedesco explained on Monday.

What do Courtois' teammates say when they see him resign from the national team?

According to Belgian media, the Real Madrid goalkeeper's teammates were surprised by his decision. "It's an unfortunate situation. I would like Thibaut to be there, but the group process is more important. And now it has been disrupted, we will have to find a solution," said defender Jan Vertonghen, the player with the most appearances in the Belgian national team, on Monday. Without Courtois, Belgium's goalkeeper against Estonia on Tuesday will be Strasbourg's Mats Sels.
