PSG chiefs are concerned over Kylian Mbappe's lucrative £650,000-per-week contract, with his deal taking up a quarter of the budget. Reports in France confirm the star will earn an eye-watering £547m over three years, making him the highest-paid player in the world. PSG's chiefs are concerned over the viability of maintaining Mbappe's contract, and worry that the 23-year-old's deal is also having a knock-on effect on his team and staff.

The 23-year-old signed a new deal with the French champions in the summer despite being closely linked with a move to Real Madrid. According to reports in France, the new deal makes him the highest-paid sportsperson ever. Mbappe's lucrative contract takes up a quarter of the team's total budget, meaning PSG will struggle to add reinforcements to their team. Mbappe's new contract is also having a knock-on effect on his team-mates and staff at the club.

During Covid-19, PSG made several salary reductions, and some of those cuts are still in place today despite Mbappe's summer raise. Mbappe's contract is said to include several clauses, but no performance bonuses for the Champions League or Ballon d'Or. One of those clauses includes a £156million signing bonus, payable over three years even if the player leaves. He will also receive a £61million loyalty bonus at the end of the season that will increase every year.

What more can PSG offer?

Finally, the contract is said to have an option of a two-year extension that can be triggered only by the player himself. Mbappe has scored 164 goals in 177 games for PSG since joining for £130.5million from Monaco in 2018, and netted 21 times in 39 appearances on loan in Paris the year before the deal was made permanent. Mbappe, however, has reportedly asked to leave the club already, eyeing a January move after he was left feeling let down by the club's owners.
