Neymar is coming for Mbappe and Messi in key Ligue 1 statistics categories after PSG's win over Lorient. Although many are paying attention to the resurgence of Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar Jr. is challenging his teammate as to who will have the better 2022-23 football season. Neymar again appeared on the score sheet in the capital club’s matchup against FC Lorient on Sunday at the Stade du Moustoir.

The 30-year-old generated the turnover and scored the opening goal. Additionally, the Brazilian provided an assist on the goal from Danilo Pereira, which proved to be the game-winner. Hadrien Grenier on Twitter pointed out a couple of interesting stats that show how dominant Neymar has been in Ligue 1 this season. Also, it displays how he’s challenging his PSG teammates, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, for league-leading stats.

After PSG’s 2-1 win over FC Lorient on Sunday at the Stade du Moustoir, Neymar is currently tied with Mbappe for the Ligue 1 lead in goals scored with 12, and the Brazilian is second in the league regarding assists (10) with Messi only having more. Neymar is in good form heading into the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he will be tasked with helping lead Brazil to win the competition and end the country’s 20-year drought.

World Cup break poses an awkward challenge

The break in club football could either halt the Brazilian's resurgence, should he get injured or suffer disappointment, or it could spur him on to higher heights should the Canaries win the World Cup. No matter the winner, someone will be looking over their shoulder after the tournament with something to prove. Club managers have their work cut out in terms of refocusing the players when they return from Qatar.
