Manchester United are interested in signing Chelsea target Edson Alvarez from Ajax, according to reports. The 25-year-old has been one of the stand-out performers for the Dutch side this season,  And his form has attracted the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs, with Chelsea said to be leading the chase for his signature last summer.

However, United are now reportedly ready to make their move for the Mexican international, who can play either at centre-back or in midfield.
Edson Alvarez is a Mexican professional footballer who plays for Ajax in the Eredivisie. He is also a member of the Mexico national team. Alvarez began his career with Club America, making his first-team debut in 2016.

In 2019, he moved to Europe to join Ajax. Since then, he has made over 77 appearances for the Dutch club and has been a regular starter since the 2020–21 campaign, helping them win two Eredivisie titles. Alvarez made his senior international debut for Mexico in 2018 and was part of their squad that competed at that year's FIFA World Cup.

He has also represented his country at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they won the title. And he is for sure going to be a regular for Gerardo Martino's El Tri for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. As of 2022, Alvarez has been capped 58 times by Mexico.

Why is Manchester United interested in him?

He is a versatile defender who can play both centre-back and right-back, and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing him from Ajax since Erik ten Hag, the current Red Devils manager already knows his capabilities. The 25-year-old has a contract with Ajax until 2025, but it is believed that he would be open to a move to a bigger club. Manchester United are said to be monitoring his situation closely and could make a move for him in the winter transfer window.
