No Benzema? No problem. On September 7, Karim Benzema was ruled out for Real Madrid's games due to an injury in his right thigh suffered during the Champions League match against Celtic. According to the medical studies the French player went through he could miss up to six games.

But an unlikely hero rose among all of the young Real Madrid stars: the Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde. This player arrived at the Bernabeú in 2016 and even had a short loan to Deportivo La Coruña before settling himself in the first squad. Even though the 24-year-old is already a big part of the team, he had to battle for his right to be on the starting eleven.

Of course, he is usually used in the midfield but recently Carlo Ancelotti proved Valverde has a wide range of abilities than goes far from what we all seen in his previous seasons. As a striker, the Uruguayan showed he could compete with the Brazilian duo Vinicius and Rodrygo.

He broke his own goal-scoring record

Prior to this season, Federico Valverde had an established goal-scoring record per season: only three goals per year. But it seems Benzema's absences somehow inspired him to unleash his inner Cristiano Ronaldo. With his goal in the derby against Atlético, his count is now up to four goals this season. Maybe with more time, he could even bench Benzema.
