The Ballon d'Or gala finally finished with what everyone had already anticipated: Karim Benzema was crowned as the best footballer of the year. The French player finally had his moment to shine on his own, ending many years under Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow. He certainly deserved to win the award.

But there was another Frenchman at the gala who realized how much he still has to work to be recognized as the best player in the world. Kylian Mbappe despite being the best-paid athlete in the world (83 million dollars a year), could not even be in the top five best players in the world, according to France Football.

The list of the best five footballers included the Real Madrid player, Sadio Mané, who now plays for Bayern Munich, Kevin de Bruyne of Manchester City, the now Barcelona player Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool. Right in the sixth position is Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe's words on CONMEBOL

"Argentina and Brazil don't have that level of competition in South America," Mbappe said in May. Now it became clear that karma comes sooner or later. By underestimating the entire region of southern Latin America, karma really hit him hard. France and Mbappe were humiliated in the Nations League and were left out of the final four despite having won the previous edition. Will the World Cup also be a failure?
