Lionel Messi's two goals and two assists set tongues wagging as Paris St Germain waltzed past Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa 7-2 and the man who's been described as his biggest hater may not have been impressed by the performance. That's because the performance gave him 1,127 goals and broke a decades-long record set by Edson Arantes do Nascimento commonly known as Pele.

Pele famously said; “When Messi's scored 1,283 goals like me, when he's won three World Cups, we'll talk about it,” when asked about the then 24-year-old Messi's potential to become the greatest player of all time. And while Messi hardly gives interviews much less descends into a war of words in the media he's continued chipping away at the record.

On Wednesday, Messi also became the oldest player to register two goals and two assists in a Champions League game  and after a lackluster 2021/22 looks set to play himself into form for the crucial end-of-year celebration of football in the Middle East.

Messi's adds Pele's old record to his never-ending list of achievements, he also holds the La Liga scoring record with 474 goals, Seven Ballon D'ors, the most held by any player, and is the first player to win six European Golden Shoes.
