The fate of Sergiño Dest at FC Barcelona seems more doubtful than ever, according to a report from the Spanish media SPORT. The current La Liga champions have the firm intention of making the young defender profitable in the summer transfer window of 2024, when his loan at PSV Eindhoven ends.

Sergiño Dest, born in Almere but trained in the ranks of Ajax Amsterdam, became famous in the Dutch club before signing for Barcelona in October 2020 in an operation valued at 21 million euros. Although he had an exciting debut season with Barcelona, his level dropped in the 2021/22 campaign. The Blaugrana decided to loan him to AC Milan with the idea of relaunching his career, but playing time was scarce in Italy, which led to his return to Barcelona with his rating declining.

Barcelona had difficulty finding potential buyers for Dest, which ultimately led to them loaning him to PSV Eindhoven for a season. Although the young defender has had an acceptable performance in his eight games so far, he has not yet managed to stand out noticeably. The question that arises is whether PSV Eindhoven will try to sign the 22-year-old player permanently in the next summer market of 2024.

Sergiño Dest's fate at Barcelona seems sealed, regardless of what happens with the negotiations between the Barça club and Manchester City. Therefore, it will be necessary to see if the current La Liga champion obtains an adequate offer for the player in the 2024 summer transfer market, with the aim of renewing its squad and taking advantage of its resources.

The decision that Barcelona would have made

Barcelona wants to take advantage of his situation when he returns from his loan at PSV, in order to reduce the losses on his investment after two seasons of discreet results. In the current season, Barcelona seems to have found a solution to its problems at right back with the incorporation of Joao Cancelo. The Catalan club intends to seal a definitive agreement to sign the Portuguese international next year, although negotiations could be difficult.
