Without Kylian Mbappé, Paris Saint-Germain had scored in both official matches of the season (one for the French Super Cup). With the return of the French striker, the trident was reconfigured, completed by Lionel Messi and Neymar. The new coach, Christophe Galtier, modified the scheme he inherited from Mauricio Pochettino, by deploying a line with three defenders -Sergio Ramos started with the starting lineup and continuity he lacked in the last season-, while maintaining the famous striker.

With the addition of Mbappé, the French champion gave another demonstration of offensive power. They thrashed Montpellier, who had made their Ligue 1 debut with a win over Troyes, 5-2 at the Parc des Princes. Fourteen goals in three games for PSG, whose supremacy at home will be very difficult to counter. Not since 1961/62, when Reims did it, had a team scored 10 goals in the first two rounds of the competition.

Mbappé's behavior in PSG's match is creating controversy in the locker room

What Mbappé said about Leo Messi and his seventh Ballon d'Or award

Messi had scored in the two previous matches: three goals, one of which was a bicycle kick, the first of its kind in his vast repertoire. Against Montpellier his streak was cut short, in a favorable development to score in the scoreboard due to the wide home dominance.

With Mbappé on the pitch, Leo stepped less in the box, he was more involved in the development, he showed himself in three quarters of the field, either on the right or in the central lanes. His search for the goal was reduced to shots from outside the box, with a free kick that was deflected with a great save by Austrian goalkeeper Jonas Omlin.

Galtier statement on penalty duties

At the press conference, Galtier confirmed the order in which the penalties would be taken: first Mbappé and then Neymar. The Kylian’s penalty was saved, the first he misses in the last three years. With a curiosity: the four penalties he missed of the 21 he took in his career at PSG, all were at the Parc des Princes.
