Javier Tebas, President of La Liga, has made a statement on FC Barcelona and its involvement surrounding the Negreiras Case, which is still on everyone's mouth as the Blaugrana team hasn’t faced any penalization due to a potential corruption problem involving the referees of the Spanish league and the Catalan team.

If he does not explain well or more reasonably what happened, I think he should resign. He only has made any superficial statements.”, said Javier Tebas on Joan Laporta’s (CEO of FC Barcelona) statement on the Negreiras case. La Liga’s president was present at the presentation of the new salary limits for the First and Second clubs.

Some of the Spanish clubs that are still upset about Barcelona’s corruption acts are Sevilla, Espanyol and Atletico Madrid, who were present at the same event, and were the ones who questioned Tebas on what actions will La Liga take on Barcelona. Mateu Alemany, football director of the Culé team informed that the club has already opened an intern investigation to know the whereabouts of the seven million euro paid to the Spanish referees vice president, José María Enríquez Negreira.

Javier Tebas was invited to an interview with Movistar+ and when he was asked on what would be the right sanctions for FC Barcelona if the investigations conclude that if the Blaugrana team indeed made this deals with Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, “The sanction for the Negreiras Case ranges from a warning to relegation to the second division.”.

What is the Negreiras Case?

As we said before, FC Barcelona is the principal suspect in one of the biggest corruption cases in the Spanish league. The Negreiras Case (or even called Barcagate) involves the Spanish Tax Agency, FC Barcelona and Jose María Enriquez Negreira -former Spanish referee- who was in charge of the vice presidency of the Technical Committee of Referees from 1990 to 2018.

Enriquez Negreiras was benefited with 7.3 million euros (about 7.73 mdlls) allegedly paid by FC Barcelona through 2001 to 2018. Barcelona would pay these incredible amounts of money through five fake companies, all owned by Enriquez Negreira. The Spanish Prosecutor office opened an investigation in 2022 on Negreiras and Barcelona, but a resolution hasn’t been published or announced.
