One of the things that Erik ten Hag is looking to change now that he was presented as the new coach of Manchester United, is the defense that The Red Devils had last season, as they received 57 goals in Premier League, a stat that cut short their aspirations.

Although the most evident priorities are a midfielder that can replace Paul Pogba and Juan Mata, and a striker that can complement Cristiano Ronaldo, the Dutchman also knows that strengthening the defense is needed if they want to be solid contenders for the title.

That’s why ten Hag is already looking to add at least a new center-back, as he’s trying to replace Harry Maguire in the starting XI, who was called to be the leader of the defense but instead turned out to be the weakest point in United’s lineup.

Three options to replace him

Ten Hag has three options to replace Maguire, starting with Pau Torres, who plays for La Liga side Villarreal FC. According to The Daily Mail, United is willing to pay $70 million for the 25-year-old Spanish center-back, who is under contract with the Yellow Submarine until 2024.

The second option for The Red Devils is Jurriën Timber, who Erik ten Hag knows well from his stint in Eredivisie side AFC Ajax. The Godenzonen are asking $54 million for the 20-year-old center-back, and according to The Guardian, the negotiations are in an early stage.

The last player on the list is Alesandro Bastoni, who currently plays for Serie A side Inter Milan. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Erik ten Hag is an admirer of the 23-year-old Italian center-back and Inter is willing to sell him to The Red Devils for an offer around $65 million.
