Bayern Munich makes future plans with the money from Robert Lewandowski's transfer

After the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt was confirmed, the Dutchman becomes the eleventh defender in the last decade to be acquired by the German club. Which, according to 'Transfermartk', adds up to a total expenditure of €345.5 million invested in defenders alone.

Lucas Hernandez ranks first as the most expensive signing in the club's history. Bayern paid 80 million euros for the Frenchman, while for De Ligt they paid a fixed 67 million euros plus 10 million euros in variables. Sané is the third most expensive player and the podium of the most expensive defenders is completed by Dayot Upamecano, for whom Bayern paid 42.5 million euros.

Of the four players for whom Bayern have paid the highest amount, three of them are defenders. This figure increases when taking into account the 'top 10' most expensive transfers in Bayern's history. The signings of Pavard and Hummels for 35 million each, certify that of the ten most expensive players in its history, half of them are defenders.

Seven seasons in a row of defensive signings

Investing in defensive players is nothing new for Bayern. In each of seven summers, Bayern have made at least one addition to the team's back line. In addition to the five players mentioned above, there are Mazraoui, Bouna Sarr, Alphonso Davies and Niklas Süle.

These signings have allowed Bayern to become the team with the fewest goals conceded in five of the last seven Bundesliga editions.
