Manchester United set to pay million-dollar buyout clause for next star from Benfica

The 29-year-old offensive midfielder joined Man United’s academy teams back in 2001 and made his debut with the first team in 2014, with only two departures -both on loan- since then. The first one, to Derby County in 2015 and the second one to West Ham in 2021.

But now that United made official his departure, this time for good, after losing the protagonist role, it is Erik ten Hag who already is looking for a replacement for the offensive midfielder, and he already has one in mind that knows how Premier League works.

United, looking to break the summer transfer window

According to reports from The Sun, Erik ten Hag already started conversations with Mason Mount’s camp as the negotiations with Chelsea for a contract extension have stalled. Mount recently was named the player of the year for Chelsea’s followers for the second year in a row, but he’s one of the players with the lowest salary on the team.

Although he started negotiating a contract extension before the takeover, now that the new ownership arrived, they are looking to strengthen their defense, taking away the money destined to increase Mount’s salary.

Ten Hag has followed him closely since he played in Eredivisie a few years ago, and now that he has the means to sign him, he’s now waiting to see how negotiations with Chelsea develops. If The Red Devils were to acquire him, they will have to pay at least $80 million.
