Atlético Madrid has had a terrible start to the 2022-23 season both in La Liga and Champions League. Their record this season is 4 wins, 1 tie and 3 losses. Even though the club has made an effort to reinforce the team, reality is that their season is so far, a disaster and their finances might be one of the issues.

Not only does Atlético have the most expensive coach in the world, but their squad has many players that earn money and don't bring the club up. Joao Felix, for example, is not at his best moment and still bills a solid 9,2 million euros to the club. Atlético Madrid have a debt of around 400 million euros and this is reason enough for the club to make a radical decision.

In spain, media has announced that the club might be selling up to 60% of their stock shares for a price that surrounds the 1.2 billion euros. This way, the club could relieve their debts and be left with 700 million euros for them to spend, possibly on new signings in the next transfer window. This way, it seems, the club will ideally solve their soccer and money related problems.

The club's CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marin has decided to sell the club and has stated that his time with Atlético might be coming to an end. Gil Marin also expressed his desire for the new owner to enhance the value of the club and increase their legacy to soccer history.

Atletico's new season might be Simeone's last

As stated before, one of the biggest expenses that the spanish club has is in fact their head coach Diego Simeone. His salary is the highest one for a coach in europe, as he's payed 3.3 million euros a month, well over coaches like Pep Guardiola who earns 1,89 million euros a month or Jurgen Klopp who earns 1,49 million euros a month. This, alongside the lack of results and titles over the last years may be the end of ‘Cholo’s' era in Madrid.
