After two weeks of intense training in Fort Lauderdale under the orders of coach Gerardo Martino and his assistants, this Friday Inter Miami played their first game in 2024. It was a friendly against the El Salvador National Team at the Cuscatlán Stadium. The Herons introduced their new stars, German midfielder Julian Gressel and Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez, as well as the squad's other top players, such as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Lionel Messi's reaction to Inter Miami's 0-0 draw watching from the bench

Lionel Messi was obviously also on the field. Wearing the number 10 shirt and armband, he was part of the starting lineup and starred in the team's two best attacks during the first half, with a shot saved by goalkeeper Martinez and a beautiful assist to Alba, before being replaced after the break by Facundo Farias.

However, the most striking situation happened before the start of the game. As usual, the skippers of both teams gathered in the middle of the field together with the referee and the other officials to draw lots for the goal in which each team would start defending, as well as who would get the ball at the beginning of the game.

Leo had the opportunity to choose heads or tails when Ivan Barton tossed the coin. The forward chose heads, but before he knew what had come out, the Salvadoran referee made an unexpected comment: "You're watching, ha", implying that Messi wanted to cheat to know which side of the coin had come out and so choose. This was obviously a joke and the situation ended with laughter from everyone.

What's next for them?

After the 0-0 draw against El Salvador, Inter Miami returned to the United States to rest and prepare for the next friendly match: next Monday they will face Dallas FC at the Cotton Bowl. And a week later they will travel to Saudi Arabia to participate in the Riyadh Season Cup against Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr. Then they will play against an all-star team from the Hong Kong league and finally they will face Vissel Kobe in Japan.
