Inter Miami and Lionel Messi are looking to replicate their stellar 2025 performance in 2026. Last year, the Florida side secured the MLS Cup title against the Vancouver Whitecaps and made history as the only CONCACAF team to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they eventually fell to PSG in the Round of 16. Following these milestones achieved under the ownership of David Beckham, the "Herons" are now aiming for a "Back-to-Back" championship in the United States while seeking high-profile signings to bolster their roster.

Led by Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, Inter Miami is reportedly looking to raid Atletico Madrid for two of their most iconic players of recent years: Antoine Griezmann and Koke Resurrección. According to journalist Ekrem Konur, the Argentine star has personally requested both players for the 2026 season.

Messi: A Vital Voice in Inter Miami’s Recruitment

Since his arrival in 2023, Lionel Messi has been instrumental in strengthening the squad. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has previously influenced the signings of Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Rodrigo De Paul—players he knows well and shares great chemistry with on the pitch. A move for Griezmann and Koke wouldn't be far-fetched, as Messi faced them numerous times during his legendary tenure with FC Barcelona in La Liga.

The Situation for Griezmann and Koke at Atletico

Both the Frenchman and the Spaniard have seen their roles evolve under Diego "Cholo" Simeone. Antoine Griezmann is no longer an undisputed starter in the Argentine manager's tactical scheme and might consider an exit. His contract with the Colchoneros runs until June 2027, but he has frequently expressed his desire to play in MLS one day.

On the other hand, the situation for Koke, Atletico’s captain and a club icon, is more complex. While his current deal expires in June 2026, the midfielder is expected to receive a one-year extension. However, the lure of joining the project in Miami could change the landscape.

Planning for 2026: New Signings and South American Tour

While rumors regarding Griezmann and Koke continue to swirl, Inter Miami has already begun making moves for the 2026 season. The club recently confirmed the signing of Dayne St. Clair, who was among the top-rated goalkeepers in MLS during 2025.

"I am very excited to join the club and represent them on and off the field. I can't wait to meet everyone and start preparing to win trophies," the new Inter Miami goalkeeper said in an introductory video.

Inter Miami will kick off their preseason in South America, visiting Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Lionel Messi and company are set to face Atlético Nacional, Barcelona SC, and Alianza Lima in a high-profile tour before the MLS season officially begins in March.
