Atletico Madrid star Hector Herrera joins MLS's Houston Dynamo at the end of the season

Houston Dynamo FC confirmed the signing of Mexico national team captain Héctor Herrera on a pre-contract through the 2024 season with an option for 2025, the MLS club announced today. Herrera will join the Dynamo this summer as a Designated Player.

The 31-year-old is currently under contract with defending LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid and will finish the season with the Rojiblancos as they continue their UEFA Champions League and LaLiga campaigns.

Even without Koke Resurrección, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone kept his bet on Wednesday for the eleven of the last two games, including Mexican Hector Herrera.

The sequence of the draw against Manchester United, in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 at the Wanda Metropolitano (1-1), and the win against the Galician team in La Liga at the same venue last Saturday (2-0), reaffirms the coach's idea regarding his new lineup for those two matches, with Sime Vrsaljko, Héctor Herrera or Renan Lodi as starters, when previously they had hardly been in the starting lineup this season.

Results rule. And, on that eleven, Atlético is building the reaction, not only on the scoreboard, but also in the game, since the 0-3 against Osasuna at the El Sadar stadium, when Sime Vrsaljko, as a right-back, and Héctor Herrera, as a center midfielder, resurfaced in the starting lineup.

The two will play their third consecutive match as starters at the Benito Villamarín, in a crucial game for the team's number one objective: the indispensable qualification for next season's Champions League.

Herrera to arrive in Houston in the summer

Herrera returns to North America as one of the most decorated Mexican players ever to play professionally in Europe.

He won domestic titles in Spain and Portugal and his 55 Champions League appearances are the most for any Mexican player in history. Herrera was a key contributor to Atletico Madrid's LaLiga championship in the 2020-21 season. The midfielder also won three domestic trophies with FC Porto, starting with the 2017-18 league title and the 2013 and 2018 Portuguese Super Cup.

Herrera began his professional career in his native Mexico with Pachuca Soccer Club in 2010 when he graduated from the club's academy at the age of 20. The midfielder made his professional debut against Chivas USA in the North American SuperLiga in 2010 and finished with 55 appearances for the club in all competitions.
