Last season, Los Angeles FC won the MLS Supporters Shield after totalizing 72 points during the regular season. Carlos Vela was on fire. The franchise won the title for the first time since it was founded in 2014. This season seems to be different, with LAFC failing to keep the pace of the Cascadian teams. Meanwhile, the East is now governed by Toronto FC, Gregg Vanney's team, which reached the top after their last triumph.
The Canadian franchise extended their winning path one more game with their fourth victory on a row after beating New England Revolution 1-0. Since Columbus Crew lost at home against fellow Canadians Montreal Impact, the Red had become the leaders of the Eastern Conference. Also, they haven't lost none of their last 6 games.
The only goal of the match was scored by American striker Ayo Akinola. It was his eighth goal of the season, and enough for Toronto FC to win. After been defeated by Montreal Impact, Columbus Crew stuck at 31 points. Philadelphia Union, defeated Cincinnati and reached 31 points too.
Greg Vanney's team is working hard to keep their streak. They are seeking the MLS Supporters Shield. To achieve their objective, they depend almost exclusively on the goals of Akinola, the team’s star since they have come back from the COVID-19 brake. The one and only time that Toronto won the Supporters Shield, back in 2017, they also won the MLS Cup. Will they be able to regain it?
