When Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) took over Paris Saint-Germain in 2011, PSG was just a mid-table side with decent players and a decent budget. But that quickly changed and the immediate €42m signing of Javier Pastore from Palermo was a sign of things to come from the Oil-rich owners. Since then, PSG has spent over €1.3bn on the acquisition of new players.

With all these riches have come numerous Ligue 1 titles and an almost impenetrable dominance of domestic football in France. However, their Holy Grail eludes them still. The pinnacle of European football, the UEFA Champions League is the ultimate target for the Qatari owners and they have since fallen short of that peak. Perpetual disappointments have given way to more recent little successes, the zenith of that being a 1-0 loss in a final appearance against Bayern Munich in 2020. The hierarchy at PSG must know they are drawing closer.

Another semi-final appearance last season has made the Paris side go on a spending spree this summer with the hopes of building a star-studded side that can hopefully win the title. They have spent €60m in bringing in Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan to solve a niggling right centre-back/wing-back problem. They have also acquired Danilo Pereira for €16m from FC Porto and Gini Wijnaldum from Liverpool to bulk up the defensive midfield positions. Sergio Ramos and Gigi Donnarumma have also come in on free transfers to overall a defence that has been the concern for PSG.

In all, PSG has spent €76m in transfer fees this summer but also a lot of money on wages as players like Sergio Ramos, Gigi Donnarumma and Gini Wijnaldum are expected to be on hefty salaries. There are reports that the club is about to sign free agent Lionel Messi on a 2-year deal worth €35m. Rumours that Paul Pogba might be PSG-bound in a £40m deal also keeps popping up. With these signings, the club is perfectly placed to launch a real challenge on the Champions League this season.
