The controversial statement of Jim Curtin. Does really Philadelphia Union have the best centre backs in the league?

The Union has McKenzie, Elliot and Glesnes continuously rotating with good results. But, they are not the only team with great defensive performances.

Philadelphia Union has shown undoubtly to have one of the strongest defenses across the league. In this way, its head coach Jim Curtin has said that “the three center backs that have been playing the minutes have been better than any in the league”, but is that statement real?

No one can doubt of the luck Philadelphia Union has in the continuous rotation of their three centre backs. Mark McKenzie, Jack Elliot and Jakob Glesnes had great performances. “They’ve been at the top of their game, they’ve embraced the rotation where it’s two games on, one game off. … We can’t find a drop off at all no matter what the pairing is. Not many coaches, not just in MLS but all over the world, can say they have three that are able to play at the level that these guys are playing, “ Curtin explained.

However, if we go to numbers, Curtin cannot dismiss the work for example Columbus Crew SC is doing in the league. The Crew has only received two goals in ten Regular Season games. Something that is highlighted by the performances of their centre backs: Jonthan Mensah and Josh Williams. Their experience is one of the particular reasons why they are leadearing the Eastern Conference.
