In Sunday's first two games of the 2022 MLS season opener, Orlando City beat CF Montreal 2-0, while Atlanta United beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1. Both winning teams hosted their rivals at home and imposed local conditions.

On the other hand, CF Montreal, which was coming off a CONCACAF Champions League win over Mexican team Santos Laguna, was defeated in its 2022 season debut while Sporting Kansas City, a team from the Western Conference, was dominated by Gonzalo Pineda's team.
