Don Garber talked about the rumours going on about both leagues merging to prepare for 2026 World Cup and make of the new league a more profitable product.

With North American World Cup six years from now, rumours about a North American league started running. MLS already merges American and Canadian soccer, so adding Mexican teams could be seen as a way of putting the bar higher and improve the competition, but it would not be very popular among the fans, who would not benefit from this.

In regards to this situation of merging leagues. Don Garber, MLS commissioner, was asked what was going to happen and if there was at least a plan for it looking forward to 2026. Garber decided to put an end to these voices, and talked about the differences between MLS and Liga MX.

Garber said the merge was not possible and was not something he seeing at least for the short term. He made clear there is a good relationship between both leagues and a merge would ruin it. The commissioner also told the leagues are too different and the only way to solve those differences was with small steps.

Garber talked to the former USMNT striker Taylor Twellman in an interview for ESPN and also stated he is focused just in the development of American and Canadian soccer and will not think about changing that. If the merge happens, it will be in a long, long time, when Garber is not in that position anymore.
