The complicated 2020 MLS season came to an end and with it the celebration of 25 years of the founding of the league. It was an atypical tournament full of uncertainty with a pandemic, empty stadiums and many players affected by the new global virus Covid-19. Finally, under much effort, the title was not vacant, remaining in the hands of the Columbus Crew, who can claim to be the 25th champion in MLS history. The MLS was founded in 1993 by Alan Rothenberg, who was then the president of US Soccer. The founding of the MLS in that year was necessary as it was a requirement of FIFA to grant permission in the organization of the 1994 World Cup, however, the MLS began to function in 1996.

In its beginnings, MLS began with 10 teams and two conferences, in a tournament where the league's own rules escaped those of FIFAand IFAB, who are the ones who supervise and define the rules of the game in the world. 25 years later the league went from having 10 to 26 teams, the cup or trophy was modified a couple of times, the famous shootouts ceased to exist and draws were allowed. The match schedule is not the same as FIFA´s but the league rules are already under the supervision of the international body.

There is no doubt that MLS has had an impressive evolution in 25 years, becoming among the 10 with the best attendance in the world, every day more important players arrive, the standard of living is also very enviable, in addition to the fanaticism for soccer who has already reached basketball or NFL football.

Congratulations to the MLS for his 25 years of founding

The MLS began to enter the eyes of the world since the year 2000 where there were already 12 teams that participated, players such as: Lothar Matthäus, Jorge Campos or Cuautemoc Blanco arrived, the curious rules disappeared as well as skills contests or star games as by the year 2000, the MLS league was beginning to be taken seriously and many great stars came to fill stadiums and retire.

There is nothing left but to congratulate the MLS on its 25 years of life and pay tribute to its 25 champions.
