Cruz Azul suffered a setback in the first matchday after losing to Mazatlán at the Azteca Stadium. Now they will face Santos Laguna at the TSM Corona, where they will replay the final of the last Guardianes 2021, which ended with the coronation of La Máquina and the ninth star in the history of the Cruz Azul.

The runners-up will be out for revenge in a match that will be a clash between the two best teams from the previous semester. Santos is coming off a 3-0 win over Necaxa at the start of the Apertura 2021, so they will be in high spirits for a match scheduled for Sunday, 1 August.

Juan Reynoso's men were unable to overcome the team's eight absentees at this stage and succumbed to the violet team, who were able to take advantage of two opportunities to take the three points away from home.

When and at what time do Cruz Azul vs. Santos Laguna play?

Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna will bring the curtain down on the second matchday of the 2021 Liga MX Apertura on Sunday, August 1 at  16:00 PT / 19:00 ET.

How did Cruz Azul fare in the first Liga MX match?

Spanish coach Beñat San José's Mazatlán made the headlines on the first day of the 2021 Mexican Apertura tournament with a 2-0 win over champions Cruz Azul at their home stadium, the Azteca.

Mazatlán escaped unscathed from the first-half attacks of Peruvian coach Juan Reynoso's Azules and, with goals from Chilean Nicolás Díaz and Bryan Colula, earned the three points. Cruz Azul had a chance to score in the 70th minute with a penalty kick by Argentine Guillermo Fernández, but goalkeeper Nicolás Vikonis saved the shot and cleared a second shot, after which the home team slowed down.

Mazatlán's victory was the highlight of the first matchday, which was characterized by the good performance of the visiting teams, with five wins, three draws and one defeat. The only local team to score three points was Pachuca, led by Uruguayan coach Paulo Pezzolano, who beat León, the team with which Argentine coach Ariel Holan made his debut, 4-0 on Saturday.
