The representative teams of the MLS for the next edition of Concacaf Champions League 2021, will be the Columbus Crew, who is the current champion of the league; the Philadelphia Union, which was the best team during the regular season, the Portland Timbers, who won the MLS is Back tournament, with which the campaign was resumed in Florida after paralysis by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Finally, as the last participant, the Atlanta United which despite its poor campaign got an invitation from Concacaf and will play the 2021 Concacaf Champions League, which will be its third consecutive competition. The Concacaf board of directors approved a request from the American Soccer Federation to give Atlanta United a place in the upcoming 2021 Champions League, to be played with 16 confederation clubs.

Why will Atlanta United participate in the next edition of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League?

That is because the MLS team, led by the Argentinian Gabriel Heinze, is the last cup champion in the United States. Atlanta United won the Cup in 2019 against the Minnesota United 2 - 1, qualifying for the 2020 Champions League edition. However, the 2020 Cup competition was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

So, The Atlanta United with the request made from the American Soccer Federation, will occupy the place that would have belonged to the 2020 Cup tournament champion. In 2019, Atlanta was eliminated from the quarterfinals, after qualifying for the first time in its history, as league champion.
