Chofis Lopez is tearing MLS apart: The records he set

Javier Eduardo 'Chofis' Lopez Ramirez, commonly called Javier Lopez/La Chofis, is one of the current exports of the Liga MX to the MLS. Chofiz Lopez is on loan from Guadalajara to San Jose Earthquakes and he is tearing the American league apart. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder is following the footsteps of other Mexican greats by redefining his career in the MLS.

Javier Lopez learned the basics of football from the youth teams of Centro de Sinergia Futbolística (CESIFUT) soccer academy based in Lerdo, Durango. He then made his senior debut Guadalajara on February 24th, 2013 in a league match against Leon. Since overcoming a number of injury crisis at the start of his career, Javier Lopez has managed to settle and made great strides in the Guadalajara side.

So far, he has made 141 appearances and scored 16 goals for the Liga MX side. However, La Chofis, is never too far from controversy and he was suspended in November 2020 after he was accused of sexually abusing a teammate, Dieter Villalpando at a party. In January 2021, Javier Lopez sought to start a new life and agreed a loan deal with MLS side, San Jose Earthquakes.

Javier Lopez/La Chofis has had a bit of a resurgence in the MLS with San Jose Earthquakes. In less than a year, the 27-year-old player has scored a total of 11 goals from just 26 matches. For context, La Chofis scored 16 goals in 141 matches for Guadalajara in 8 seasons so far.

In recognition of his impressive performance all round, Eduardo 'Chofis' Lopez was named as the Week 26 MLS Player of the Week in September after he scored a hat-trick against Real Salt Lake and a brace against Austin FC. A key component many believe is the cause of his resurgence is his linking-up with Coach Matias Almeyda. Almeyda brought him through at Guadalajara. 'Chofis' Lopez has also caught the eye back home, with many soccer pundits calling for his inclusion to the National team.
