2021 was a difficult year for soccer, especially towards the end as Covid outbreaks rose throughout the leagues, some even had to cancel games to stop the spreading of the virus.  But some players had a difficult time as they saw how their numbers diminished.

Whether is because they haven’t had enough playtime, or because they’re having a tough time with their current teams, some Mexican players could be looking for a new team to start 2022, especially if they want to be considered by Tata Martino for the final squad that will attend the FIFA World Cup to be played in Qatar.

Héctor Herrera

The Atlético de Madrid midfielder hasn’t had enough playtime during the current season, as Diego Simeone has preferred keeping him benched.  The signing of Rodrigo de Paul over the summer instantly cut his time on the pitch, and if Herrera wants regularity, he’ll have to start looking somewhere outside Madrid.

HH has been linked to Roma FC, a team that has wanted to add him previously, but it seems as if his lack of playing time with the Colchoneros could be the last push both Atleti and Herrera needed to part ways.

Herrera is under contract for six more months, but Atlético de Madrid could sell him this winter transfer window if they want to earn something in return for him before he becomes a free agent, and it seems as Roma could be the perfect landing spot for him.

Diego Lainez

The 21-year-old offensive midfielder has been playing for Real Betis for the last two and a half seasons, after he joined the team from América. But since he arrived to La Liga, he hasn’t had the regularity he’d wish he had.

Although Betis has said they don’t intend on selling the youngster, a loan of the Mexican could be the best thing for the two parties involved. With a loan, Lainez could win the regularity and adaptation he wishes and Betis will retain the players’ rights so he can go back and become the asset they are waiting he becomes.

Lainez is under contract with los Béticos until 2024, but has been linked with multiple Spanish second division teams such as Elche CF, RCD Mallorca and RCD Espanyol, and even Chivas has been asking for a loan for Clausura 2022.

Tecatito Corona

After becoming MVP of the Portuguese League in 2020 and being one of the finalist for the same award in 2021, Jesús Manuel “Tecatito” Corona has not been showing his best side during the current season.

Corona is on the last year of his contract, but could be on the move as soon as this winter transfer window, as he’s been linked multiple times with Sevilla FC. Although it’s been a recurring theme over the last year, Sevilla might not be as interested as it seems, but Corona’s fate is still pointing to be out of Portugal. AC Milan is a team that has been watching Tecatito and are interested in acquiring him.

Marcelo Flores

He has yet to play with Arsenal’s first team –although it seems more like ‘when’ not ‘if’ type of situation–, but Marcelo Flores, one of the most promising Mexican players in the present might be having a new team over the summer.

Arsenal wants to acquire Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, and Flores could be involved in the trade with the Catalonian team, as Barça is investing in young promising players and Marcelo Flores is enjoying good fortune lately, so much that he already had his debut with the Mexican National Team.
