Gerardo “Tata” Martino still has to find a way to improve the poor performances that Mexico National Team had during the CONCACAF Qualifiers if he wants El Tri to have a worthy participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Although he already has found the right formula for the defense, he still hasn’t found a way to make the offense work, which is why he decided to call Rogelio Funes Mori in the first place, although he hasn’t given the response that Martino was expecting.

Funes Mori scored just one goal in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, evidencing the bad streak he’s going through, which coincides with the poor performances that Monterrey had when Javier Aguirre was still coaching Rayados.

The lack of consistent strikers has opened the door to another foreigner that is on the process of acquiring his Mexican citizenship, Julio Furch, who will be eligible to play for El Tri for Qatar 2022 if Gerardo Martino decides to call him.

Another player is on the process of becoming Mexican

During his stints in Argentina and Paraguay, Gerardo Martino was open to call players that weren’t born in the country if it was to improve the roster, something that he has also applied in the Mexican national team with the two forwards.

That precedent opens the door to Santos Laguna center back Matheus Dória, who is in the process of acquiring the Mexican citizenship after he received the last document a few weeks ago to start the procedure.

During a press conference, the 27-year-old center back informed that he’s going to have his citizenship test in May, which will make him eligible to play for El Tri if Gerardo Martino considers him, as he could join Johan Vásquez and César Montes to compete for the starting role.

Can he play in Qatar 2022?

Dória, who is now captain of Santos Laguna, arrived in Liga MX for Apertura 2018 out of Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille for $2.2 million. For him to be eligible to play for the Mexican national team, he has had to live at least five years in the country, which means that he’ll have to wait until the end of the 2022-23 season to finally be considered.
