Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s future as Mexico National Team coach is still hanging by a thread, given that El Tri needs to win the game against USMNT on the next FIFA match window to finally secure their ticket to Qatar 2022.

But not even in the situation he currently is, he managed to convince Carlos Vela to return to El Tri, as he needs all the help he can get to break the 3-game losing streak he has against the US Soccer MNT, given that Hirving Lozano will probably miss the game.

Instead of convincing him to return to El Tri, what Martino did was giving Carlos Vela the last push he needed to officially announce his retirement from Mexico National Team, as Vela knows Martino won’t change his discipline policy for El Tri’s camp.

Why did Martino help Vela decide to retire from El Tri?

According to reports, Mexican Football Federation is working on extending Gerardo Martino’s stay in El Tri’s dugout for at least the 2026 FIFA World Cup, something that “Tata” is looking for, as he will earn $8 million on the span of the 4-year contract extension.
