During the first half of Clausura 2022, Club América didn’t have any options of even making it to Repechaje, as Santiago Solari was able to make them win just one game and tie three more in the eight games that he coached Las Águilas.

But since Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños decided to part ways with him and named Fernando “Tano” Ortíz as the interim coach until the end of the season, Las Águilas have completely change and now are on the mix to win Liga MX.

The Azulcremas lost their first game with “Tano” Ortíz on the dugout against CF Monterrey, but after that game, they became one of the strongest Liga MX teams, as they managed to draw against Chivas and then have won five straight games.

They will visit Tigres on Saturday night to try and improve their streak, and if they manage to win against Los Felinos, they will become one of the top contenders for the title in Clausura 2022, especially since Tigres are one of the most consistent teams throughout the season.

Ortíz is already planning next season

Given the outstanding results and the good chemistry that “El Tano” has built in Las Águilas locker room, he’s becoming the top candidate to assume the coaching role in Club América for the next season, something that Baños already accepted.

According to reports from sports journalist Jonathan Peña, if Las Águilas make it to the semifinals, Ortíz will be ratified as the coach of Club América for at least another season and given that it looks more than probable that they make it, he already is planning the 2022-23 season.

The first thig he’ll do is part ways with three players who haven’t contributed to Las Águilas during his short stint, starting with Mauro Lainez, who has been benched and even relegated to the U-20 squad for a few games since Ortíz was promoted.

Who are the other two players that will leave?

Jonathan dos Santos is the second player that will leave Club América even if he just arrived this season, given the few minutes he’s played and the competition that Las Águilas have in the midfield. Juan Ferney Otero will be the last one to leave, as his arrival in América was a result of a whim from Solari.
