Cruz Azul couldn’t keep up with the good streak that CF Pachuca currently is having, and they lost 1-0 on their visit to Estadio Hidalgo for the game of round 11, which left La Máquina standing fifth, with 17 points, just one point below Atlas.

Although Juan Reynoso decided to give Santiago Giménez some rest, given that he had been the starter striker for La Máquina in the past few games, the 20-year-old forward had to jump on the pitch for the second half, given that Cruz Azul was down by one goal and the team hadn’t created many opportunities.

Reynoso decided to give him minutes hoping to replicate what he had done in previous games, where he had a protagonist role to give La Máquina points on the games against Tigres and Toluca, but this time he couldn’t help Cruz Azul.

It’s no lie to say that he’s one of the most important Mexican strikers, as even at a young age he’s showed that he has the abilities not only to score but to be a leader in the pitch, something that even earned him a call to Mexico National Team for the upcoming FIFA match window, which is why his performance last game felt so disappointing.

Why couldn’t he score?

The game against Pachuca was the perfect moment for him to prove Gerardo “Tata” Martino that he hadn’t made a mistake by calling him for the games against USMNT, Honduras and El Salvador, but he failed to keep up his good performances.

Even if his performance doesn’t rest him any value to his call, he will have to work harder in El Tri’s camp to earn some minutes, given that he’ll also have to compete against Raúl Jiménez and Henry Martín, although he will have to focus on it, as his mind didn’t seem to be on the pitch against Pachuca.

Reports suggest that every player that gets called to El Tri receives a figure around $25,000 per game, which could be the reason why Santiago Giménez wasn’t sharp against Los Tuzos, as his mind was already thinking of the games he’ll play with the Aztec squad.

What’s in store for Giménez?

“Chaquito” Giménez will report with Gerardo Martino on Monday to start preparing for Thursday’s game against USMNT. Then, El Tri will travel to Honduras to play there on March 27 and will return to Estadio Azteca on March 30.
