After the elimination of Cruz Azul from the CONCACAF Champions League in the semifinals against Pumas by a 2-1 aggregate, given that they couldn’t score on the second leg in Estadio Azteca, things for Juan Reynoso are not looking good.

Hugo Sánchez has emerged as one of the candidates to coach Cruz Azul next season

Since Jaime Ordiales returned to the structure as sporting director to replace Álvaro Dávila, tension began to grow between the two of them and reports even suggested that he presented his resignation day on the following day of the announcement of Ordiales’ return.

Before that, Cruz Azul was one of the top contenders for both Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions League, but since then, they’ve become an irregular team that haven’t yet ensured direct access to Liguilla, as their just one point above Atlas and Monterrey and two above Club América.

Given the tense relationship that exists between him and Ordiales, La Máquina sporting director demanded him to win at least one title this season if he wanted to remain as Cruz Azul coach, as he’s looking for an excuse to part ways with him.

Almeyda, the top contender to arrive at Cruz Azul

Ordiales is already looking for potential replacements for Reynoso and given that Matías Almeyda resigned last week to San José Earthquakes, the Argentine coach has become the strongest contender to replace Reynoso.

Reports suggest that Ordiales already tried to sign Almeyda once before but La Máquina opted to hire Reynoso given the high release clause that Almeyda used to have. The Argentine coach knows that Cruz Azul needs changes, which is why he’d part ways with José de Jesús “Chuy” Corona and Julio César “Cata” Domínguez, two of the oldest players in the roster.

Instead of them, Almeyda wants for Cruz Azul to acquire Rodolfo Octa, goalkeeper that he knows from his time at Chivas, especially since Sebastián Jurado hasn’t showed that he can be a reliable successor for “Chuy” Corona.

A former Quake will replace “Cata” Domínguez

Even if “Cata” Domínguez has been a Cruz Azul player for his entire career, in recent days he’s flirted with Pumas, team where his son plays in the academy squads, which is why Almeyda will part ways with him. Oswaldo Alanís would be the player of his choice to replace “Cata” in the defense.
