It’s uncertain how much longer José de Jesús “Chuy” Corona will miss after getting injured during the warm-ups on Cruz Azul’s visit to CF Montréal for the second leg of the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Cruz Azul has lost another player for the game against Pumas

Corona had already missed the game before La Máquina travelled to Canada, as Juan Reynoso wanted to give him rest before one of the most important games of the season at that point, but after the injury, it was Sebastián Jurado who took his place.

Jurado had a breakout season during 2019, when he debuted with the now extinct Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, which earned him a contract with La Máquina, even if other Liga MX teams were interested in him, including Pachuca and Club Puebla.

But the lack of regularity he had for two years has taken its toll on his confidence and has been erratic on the games that he’s been the starter goalkeeper, as he looks nervous whenever the ball is around him, which is why La Máquina are already looking to add another goalkeeper for next season.

He already played in Cruz Azul

Los Cementeros have always characterized for having a reliable goalkeeper despite the poor results they had for 23 years. In recent years, if Corona wasn’t available, Yosgart Gutiérrez was the man standing behind him. And before them, Óscar “Conejo” Pérez used to take care of La Máquina’s goal.

“El Conejo” remains in Cruz Azul structure, although he knows is the goalkepeers coach, which is why he knows exactly the player that La Máquina should acquire to replace Corona. Andrés Gudiño still belongs to La Máquina, although he left this season on a loan to earn regularity.

Gudiño currently plays for Liga de Expansión side Tepatitlán FC, but Cruz Azul will have him back once Clausura 2022 is over, something that will improve the competition and most definitely will increase Jurado’s level.

Will Corona retire?

It’s yet to be seen what happens with “Chuy” Corona, although reports suggest that he’s playing his last season with Cruz Azul and that he already informed Reynoso about his decision, which explains why they are looking for another goalkeeper.
