It took 13 rounds of Clausura 2022 for Amaury Vergara to realize that the thing that was hurting Chivas the most was keeping Marcelo Michel Leaño as their coach, but after the 3-1 defeat against Monterrey, he didn’t wait any longer and parted ways with the Mexican coach.

Chivas will part ways with Antonio Briseño and wants a Club América target to replace him

With Marcelo Michel Leaño on the dugout, El Rebaño Sagrado won only five games of the 22 that he coached. Chivas also tied nine games and lost the remainder eight. But on Clausura 2022 they only won three games, which explains why they were outside of the Repechaje spots.

Now with Ricardo Cadena as the interim coach for the remainder of the season -Cadena was coaching CD Tapatío-, El Rebaño was able to return to the Repechaje spots thanks to the 1-0 victory over Cruz Azul last weekend.

But Amaury Vergara knows that they need a coach with experience to help them become contenders in Liga MX once again, although the problems he had with Matías Almeyda before the Argentine coach left El Rebaño in 2018 have slowed negotiations with him.

A national team is after Almeyda

Matías Almeyda decided to part ways with San José Earthquakes last weekend after the 2-2 draw against Nashville SC, opening the door for Chivas, a club that Almeyda has said in the past that he holds close to his heart.

Almeyda is willing to return to Chivas as long as he can solve the problems with Vergara. But while they negotiate his possible return to El Rebaño for a second stint, Chile National Team has showed interest on signing him.

According to reports from sports journalist Alberto Bernard, the Chilean national team are interested in starting a new long-term project to have a generational change ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Almeyda fill the profile they’re looking for.

Chile is not the only interested party

The same report suggest that Colombia National Team are also looking for a new coach and Almeyda is willing to hear the offers both national teams have for him, as he knows that Amaury Vergara might not present an offer.
