In a grand gesture not seen as much in Liga MX as it should, Santiago Giménez prepared and handed out 50 meals on Christmas Eve to people in the streets of Mexico City. Alongside his girlfriend, Fernanda Serrano, the Cruz Azul attacker went out looking to help people have a Merry Christmas.

On the Instagram stories he posted, the couple informed that each of the meals consisted on a sandwich that Giménez and Serrano prepared themselves, a boxed juice and a chocolate bar.

“There’s nothing nicer than giving” posted the Cementero striker on his social media along a video where he’s handing out the meals on his car, showing why he’s become a fan favorite.

“I’m not doing this to show off the help I give out. I don’t believe in that but I do believe that helping is contagious and it grows bigger and bigger. Merry Christmas everyone!” Chaquito added in a later post.

Giménez with a great year in 2021

In the first semester of 2021, Chaquito Giménez was a part of the Cruz Azul team that won Clausura 2021 and broke a 23-year streak without a championship and with it ending up the curse and the mocking of all the other teams in Liga MX.

During the regular season he played 12 matches and was able to assist only one time, but he become a regular for the Liguilla, as he played the six games Cruz Azul disputed, scoring two goals, including one that let La Máquina reach the Final.

For Apertura 2021, El Bebote was a regular in the lineup Juan Reynoso used week-to-week, as he played 16 out of 17 games. He scored four goals and assisted on one occasion, which translates in a participation of 24% of the total goals Cruz Azul scored during the season.

His first goal with the Mexican National Senior Team

Although Cruz Azul wasn’t able to reach the semifinals stage in Apertura 2021, he ended the year with a call to play with the senior team of El Tri against Chile on December 8, where he managed to score his first goal wearing the Mexican colors.

The match played in Austin ended in a 2-2 draw, but Giménez was one of the best players in the pitch, something he’s looking to replicate in 2022, hoping for a spot in the squad Tata Martino will take to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
