Pumas will have a rough second part of 2021-22 Liga MX season as the team just lost one of its best players, Erik Lira, who signed with Cruz Azul. But Lillini’s squad will has been on a similar spot in recent years and has made it to semifinals last season and quarterfinals a year ago. The Universitarios will receive Toluca, which will begin a new era with Nacho Ambriz as coach. Both teams have over 10 years without winning a Liga MX championship and will be trying to break that streak in Clausura 2022.

Pumas vs Toluca: Head to Head Records

Since Liga MX changed the format of the competition to two short tournaments instead of a long season back in 1996, Pumas and Toluca have faced each other 58 times. Both teams have been regulars in the top tier Mexican league, which is why they often face each other.

The historical statistics benefit the visitors team, as they’ve won a total of 27 games since 1996. Pumas has only been able to beat Los Diablos Rojos on 16 occasions, and they’ve both tied for the remainder 15 matches.

When playing at Ciudad Universitaria, Toluca also has been dominant, as they’ve won 13 of 28 possible games. In this entry Pumas is closer to Toluca, as they’ve beaten 9 times Nacho Ambríz’s new squad. The remainder six games finished in a draw.

Though things look different in the past 8 games both squads have had, as Pumas won five of them, including the repechaje game played last season, where Los Universitarios won by a 2-1 score. Out of those eight games, Toluca has won just two of them, the last one being during Round 7 of Apertura 2021. During that span they’ve tied on one occasion.

Pumas vs Toluca: Odds and Predictions

Although historically Toluca has been the better team on the pitch against Pumas, recent statistics point towards a different direction, as Pumas has won five of the last eight encounters. But with Pumas still trying to figure how the squad will look for this game, with the losses of Lira and Dinenno, and Toluca is right in the middle of a renovation, so it’s difficult to have a clear winner.  According to FanDuel, Pumas is believed to be the favorite, as odds slightly favor them being at +110. Toluca has +250 odds, which is worth keeping an eye on them as they can surprise if Leo Fernández plays as he used to back in 2020 and knowing Pumas will have a tough time trying to score. The draw could be a better option and it could give you some money, as the odds are at +220.

Pumas News

Pumas will start Clausura 2022 with two sensible losses, as they won’t have Erik Lira nor Juan Dinenno. Cruz Azul bought Erik Lira’s economic right for $4.5 million and extended him a 4-year contract, meaning he’s out of Pumas for good.

Things are different for Juan Dinenno, as the striker won’t be available for Pumas’ season opener after being ejected in the last match Pumas played, during the semifinals against Atlas. Dinenno has been linked with Brazilian Palmeiras in recent days, but the Argentinean is still focused to play the Clausura 2022.

Pumas finished their preseason against Cruz Azul with a 1-0 victory, with a goal scored by Juan Dinenno, and he definitely will be missed in the pitch as he’s Pumas top scorer.

Toluca News

Toluca is going through a rebuilding process, which included the firing of former coach Hernán Cristante, who ended his second tenure with the team with a loss against Pumas during repechaje of Apertura 2021.

The team also parted ways with Rubens Sambueza, who was one of the most important players on the Diablos’ squad for the past few seasons. The only problem with him was his age, and as part of the restructure, Toluca is set to acquire younger players.

Toluca had plenty of arrivals during the offseason, starting with Ignacio Ambríz, the new coach, who comes back to Liga MX after a failed attempt of caching in Spanish second tier league. With him also returned Leo Fernández, who played with Toluca on Clausura 2020, when he managed to score 8 goals and assist on 4 occasions before the tournament got cancelled because of the ongoing pandemic.
