One of the sanctions imposed to Club Querétaro after the brawl that happened in the stands of Estadio Corregidora and that then translated to the pitch during the game between Gallos Blancos and Atlas was the sale of the team before 2022 ends.

Along the 5-year veto imposed to all the executives of the club and the return of the franchise to its former owner Jorgealberto Hank, who can’t keep the team given that he and Grupo Caliente already own Xolos de Tijuana in Liga MX and Dorados de Sinaloa in Liga de Expansión.

According to reports, the total value of Club Querétaro is around $100 million, including the market value of the roster, the brand, and all the shares and assets that integrate the club, which is the figure that Emilio Azcárraga would have to pay to have another team.

Since parting ways with Necaxa in 2014, Emilio Azcárraga and Televisa have had Club América as their only club, something that Yon de Luisa and Mikel Arriola will try to keep that way, as they’ve been battling against multi-property for a while.

Will Azcárraga try to acquire Querétaro?

For now, Club América’s owner hasn’t showed any signs of being interested in the possibility of having a second team, although if he was to acquire Querétaro, there’s ways to avoid multi-property, like the thing CF Pachuca and Club León do.

Instead of Azcárraga, the Club América-related individual that is interested in acquiring Club Querétaro is Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who currently is governor of Michoacán, although he wouldn’t be involved in the acquisition of the team, he is only offering a venue where Querétaro could relocate.

Which parties are interested in Querétaro?

The former Club América striker wants to have a top tier division team in his state after TV Azteca moved Monarcas Morelia out of Michoacán and relocated and rebranded it as Mazatlán FC, something that happened in 2020.

The other interested party for now is Emilio Escalante, owner of Club Atlante who currently plays in Liga de Expansión, Mexico’s second flight. In the past, he started negotiating with Hank for Querétaro, although he decided to keep Atlante in Mexico’s second division.
