With the 3-0 victory of Atlas FC over Tigres in the first leg of the semifinals of Clausura 2022, it seems like the Rojinegros are the strongest contender to win Liga MX again, as they now are looking to win back-to-back seasons, a feat that only Pumas and Club León have managed to do since the short tournaments were established.

The player who let America go and who was the hero in the Atlas vs Tigres game

It’s evident that Atlas are one of the most solid teams in Liga MX, and they have been for at least over a year, starting with Camilo Vargas who is one of the best goalkeepers in Mexican soccer, along Antony Silva from Club Puebla.

Atlas opened the score against Tigres thanks to a penalty kick from Julio Furch that was called after Nahuel Guzmán stopped Aníbal Chalá on the box. Furch keeps showing why even in one of the seasons with the lowest scoring numbers, he’s still a threat to their rivals.

As if that wasn’t enough, Luis Reyes scored the second goal 15 minutes into the second half, and Julián Quiñones closed the score just a minute before the game ended with an authentic ‘Golazo’ from outside the box, leaving Guzmán out of the play.

Diego Cocca sends a message to Alejandro Irarragori

But the victory over Tigres in Estadio Jalisco not only means half of the ticket to their second final in less than a year, but also a clear, direct message from Diego Cocca to Grupo Orlegi and Alejandro Irarragori, Atlas FC’s owner.

Even if Cocca has made the team a contender in back-to-back seasons and managed to break a 71-year drought without Liga MX titles, the Argentine coach has yet to renew with the Rojinegros as the conditions he has established haven’t been accepted by Irarragori.

Cocca’s contract with Atlas will expire at the end oof Clausura 2022, and even if he’s willing to negotiate with the ownership for a contract extension as he wants to remain in the Rojinegros’s dugout, if his demands are not met, he’s not afraid of leaving.

What is Cocca asking to extend his contract?

With the current results, he keeps pressuring for a contract extension worthy of a coach like him, as he’s only asking for two things. The first one is having a substantial salary increase, something that he’s earned by having the team competing at the top of the standings, and the second thing is to be able to select the players that he needs for Apertura 2022.
