Cruz Azul took the lead in the game first before the first half was ended. La Máquina took advantage after a mistake of the CF Montreal defense. Antuna’s goal was after a great cross of Ángel Romero, the Paraguayan midfielder who before, received the pass from Juan Escobar who intercepted a ball of the Canadian team. The former Chivas player stroke the ball in an outstanding way to increase the lead for Cruz Azul.

CF Montreal made substitutions but it wasn't enough

In the second half, CF Montreal made changes and took off Thorkelsson, a left-winger, and brought on Kamara to play as a striker. With this, Wilfried Nancy's team went forward to attack in search of three goals that would give them a pass to the semifinal, however, they could only score one goal thanks to a corner kick that was finished off by defender Camacho.

After the equalizer, Cruz Azul was able to defend and play on the counterattack, withstanding CF Montreal's attacks and managing to equalize on Canadian soil.

With this, Cruz Azul joins New York City FC, which already qualified to the semifinals after beating Comunicaciones thanks to the away rule, as the aggregate ended 5-5. La Máquina will now await either Pumas UNAM or New England Revolution, which will determine their opponent. In the first leg between the two, the MLS team won 3-0. Lillini's team will have a difficult task to reverse.
