Even if Cruz Azul needs all the help that they can get to recover the good streak they had during the start of Clausura 2022, for Juan Reynoso that plan doesn’t include Rómulo Otero, who was a healthy scratch for the game against Club América.

It didn’t matter that Juan Reynoso broke Cruz Azul’s drought, they already found his replacement

After the good start that La Máquina had in Clausura 2022, where they won four of the first six games they played and tied one more, Los Cementeros have entered an irregular phase that costed them the possibility of playing the final of the CONCACAF Champions League.

The irregular results that they earned during the rest of the regular season of Clausura 2022 already costed them the direct access to Liguilla, as before the game against Las Águilas they were standing sixth after spending most of the season as fourth.

Reynoso knows that if they want to be protagonists in Liguilla, he needs to have the best available players on the pitch, especially since both Carlos “Charly” Rodríguez and José de Jesús “Chuy” Corona have missed multiple games due to injury.

Otero, erased from La Máquina

With the absence of “Charly” Rodríguez in the midfield after getting injured against Mazatlán FC, Reynoso has trouble finding a player that could replace him, but not even that has opened the possibility for Rómulo Otero.

In the current season, the 29-year-old offensive midfielder has played only 8 games for La Máquina in Liga MX, although just one of them was a starter. Reynoso has made sure of erasing him from the roster, as he’s been a healthy scratch for five games, including the one against Club América.

It was Otero himself who said that it was a decision of the coach and not because he was injured, which opens the door to his departure once Clausura 2022 is over, even if he’s under contract until 2024. According to reports, he’s followed by Liga MX teams as well as some Brazilian clubs.

Who is the replacement that Reynoso has in mind?

Even if the skills and abilities that Otero has could benefit La Máquina, Juan Reynoso wants to give more playing time to Cristian Tabó, who arrived this season to Cruz Azul and has missed most of it due to an injury, although now that he’s healthy, it looks like he’s becoming one of Reynoso’s favorite players.
