After 90 minutes of the second leg of the semifinal between Tigres and Atlas FC, it seemed like Los Felinos were going to write another of the best chapters of Liga MX with an unbelievable comeback, but a penalty in added time over Aldo Rocha, who also kicked it, ended with the hopes of Tigres.
Will Diego Cocca stay at Atlas FC after the defeat against Tigres?
Although Tigres ended up winning 4-2 the game against the Rojinegros, the 5-4 aggregate gave Atlas the ticket to their second final in the same number of seasons, and now are looking to join Pumas UNAM and Club León as the only teams with back-to-back Liga MX Championships since the short tournaments were established.
Atlas started winning the game with a goal scored by Julián Quiñones at the end of the first half, but Tigres showed one of the more aggressive faces sin the second half since Miguel Herrera took over the team, as they managed to score the four goals that they needed to turn around the score.
Unfortunately for them, former Atlas player Jesús Angulo pushed Aldo Rocha in the box on a play that had to be reviewed by the VAR and that turned out to be a penalty that gave Atlas the ticket to the final in the last minutes of the game.
But before Aldo Rocha scored the goal that gave back the advantage to Los Rojiblancos in the aggregate, it was Anderson Santamaría the player that was going to be pointed at for losing the game, as he was involved in the play that gave Tigres the boost morale.
The game was involved in scandals given the number of penalties that were called by the referee, calling some as penalties that weren’t and some that weren’t as penalties, although he also corrected one where the Peruvian defender was holding Nicolás “Diente” López.
At first, the referee called the play the other way around, as he saw that “Diente” López trying to fool him with a dive, but when he rewatched the play, it was evident that Santamaría was holding his leg, impeding him from striking the ball.
The mistakes that he had during the game could cost him his position for Apertura 2022 but given how important he’s been for Diego Cocca both during the search for the championship last season and this season’s objectives, it looks improbable that he’ll be out of the team.
