Benfica is used to selling some of their most exciting young players over the last couple of years, but the fanbase can't help but feel sad about potentially losing Joao Neves this summer. The Portuguese midfielder is one of the brightest players that the Portuguese fans are excited for and think he will play a pivotal role in the national team for many years. Benfica may sell Neves this summer to PSG, which is willing to spend more than $70 million.
Paris Saint Germain is the most interested out of other European clubs, like Manchester United. His release clause of more than $120 million pushed clubs away from pursuing the midfielder this summer transfer window, but PSG is reluctant to still sign him, but for a lower price. Benfica is willing to sell him for a cheaper price than his release clause, and the move could be official in days.
While Neves is set to leave the club, the Portuguese midfielder already has a plan to say goodbye to the Benfica fans. Now Canal reports that João Neves will explain himself to Benfica fans in regards to leaving for PSG with a statement soon. Benfica is his boyhood club, and his message will be emotional for him and for some fans.
Fabrizio Romano reports that PSG are convinced they can get the João Neves deal done in the next few days. The club is advancing in talks with Benfica and already has an agreement with the player. Reports suggested that PSG was linked to other midfielders like Bruno Fernandes, but those have been shut down as the French club only wants Neves.
Neves played a total of 55 matches for Benfica this past season. He scored three goals and provided two assists in the Liga Portugal. He played a total of 33 league matches; six Champions League matches, six Europa League and six Taça de Portugal matches. Neves plays as a defensive midfielder who can dribble with the ball and show attacking abilities on the pitch. He earned a call-up to the Portuguese national team for the EUROS 2024 but did not play as much as many expected due to the other midfielders the national team has, like Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Palhinha.
As mentioned, João Neves was not given enough minutes in EURO 2024 as other midfielder started under Roberto Martinez, the head coach of Portugal. Neves did start and played in one match at the EUROS, which was not risky for Portugal.
He came on the pitch in the 88th minute of the match between Portugal and Turkiye in the group stage. Portugal defeated Turkiye 3-0 at the Borussia Dortmund stadium to confirm their ticket to the knockout stages. He started in Portugal's 2-0 loss against Georgia in their last game of the group stage, where he was given 75 minutes. He has seven recoveries, three interceptions, and had a shot blocked. He also has a 93% pass accuracy.
